This is real account of a mother who was part of www.igenpod.com ‘s origami art workshop.

I picked up origami in a very casual manner. One day when I was making a boat with paper, my son, who is 4 years old, was watching carefully. Then he took a paper of his own and tried making it the way I had done. It motivated me to teach him more. But as it inculcates efforts to teach something to the kids, as a mother I wanted to know what are the benefits of making him learn it. Then I searched and found the following information. So I decided to share my experience and learning with others through my videos and article. Here is the video link of my second creation:

Out of all the art forms, you can pick up origami to make your kids learn some fun crafts, get them engaged, and bring some visible output for their hard-work in no time.

“Origami” has gained its popularity all over the world but it found its maximum influence in Japan in its original years. I started taking interest in Origami when I explored some highly beneficial aspects of making my kid learn this art as he grows. In this article we are going to discuss those benefits that you too can avail by simply watching the video:

1. Minimum ingredients needed:

During the period of quarantine and lockdown, at one stage it was just not possible to go out and buy stuff. Now, although the lockdown has been relaxed we still need to take precautionary measures and must not go on an endless buying spree. These restrictions motivated me to consider trying my hands-on Origami as it requires as less as a small 6” x 6” paper only to begin your work. You can use any paper or sheet, even a newspaper can also be used to pursue this hobby.

2. Brain development and Fine Motor skills:

We create different shapes using our fingers while doing origami. It may seem very usual thing in the beginning but it can provide mastery in performing finger-based activities amongst the kids. You will notice that they tend to master the art of using their fingers to perform various tasks in-usual. You will see how perfectly and skilfully they create detailed shapes as they get involved in it.

Do you know that the kids who are good in finger-based activities tend to become good sportspersons and artists as they grow? The touch and feel of fingers across various shapes of paper help in training their brain to create something new and productive even during their idle time.

3. Fosters creativity out of minimalism:

Have you seen those people who tend to make specific patterns of lines on paper when they are alone and busy in their thoughts? Those lines convey the meaning of their prevailing state of mind. A simple art form like Origami trains the brain of your kids at a young age to become creative. They see a paper and craft something out of it. They see it working and get encouraged by the result. When they use this practice in other scopes of life, their mind automatically starts forming the brackets of “organization” and “creative ideas”. They develop the skills of problem-solving by giving themselves a minute and thinking out of the box. They organize their problems in different compartments of their mind and try to solve them step by step as they fold the paper. Some people call their pet art forms as “meditation”- origami can be a meditation for your kids.

4. Boosts memory retention:

Origami comes with unlimited art forms. You can create so many objects using paper and some relative ingredients that can be surprising and fulfilling at times. But is it possible to remember the steps of every shape you have learned? Even after practicing it several times, you tend to forget some of it over time. But you may realize it that even after years a simple recall can help you in bringing back the lost steps with ease. Thus, making your kids learn origami can not only be fun but can be used as memory exercise to boost their retention power.

We have also seen music playing an important role in the overall personality development of kids and wrote an article around that
