When Sachin Tendulkar walked to the crease at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 2, 2004, the greatest Indian batsman was terribly out of form (one of those rare occasions).
India VS Australia, two of the best teams in the world going head-to-head across four intense test matches. The scoreline level at 1–1 going into the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Tendulkar had a difficult time in the tour so far as he only managed scores of 0, 1, 37, 0 and 44 leading into the final Test. He has been getting out repeatedly, driving at wide balls outside his off stump. So when he came out to bat with India 128 for 2, Australian tail was up as they wanted to wrap up Indian innings quickly. What followed though, was 613 min of one of the greatest test match innings by none other than, Sachin Tendulkar!
Tendulkar had decided that he would not play any drives whatsoever outside his off stump and he was as good as his word. Aussie seamers tried to play on his patience by continually balling outside his off-stump. But Tendulkar just would not be tempted, and when the Australian paceman moved their line of attack toward middle and off, the batsman used his magic wrists to score down the leg side.
What Sachin did in that innings is a sheer example of why we should focus on our strengths and not drain ourselves into correcting our weakness. Of course, working on our weakness is a good thing, however when you face a situation in life where you have to compete with others, do not get intimidated by seeing something that others have and you don’t, always keep your confidence in what you possess the best, because that what makes you a winner — just like the Great Sachin Tendulkar!
